Shutters and blinds are often adjusted with cords – they can, however, pose a serious strangulation risk for small children. The Canadian Department of Health, Health Canada, has worked to minimize these risks in recent years. Nonetheless, an average of one child in Canada died from strangulation every year. Health Canada therefore introduced the new “Corded Window Coverings Regulations” on May 1, 2019, which defines, among other things, the length of the cords as well as the size of the loops.
The new requirements apply to both commercially available window coverings and also to articles designed according to customer wishes. The new law will take effect on May 1, 2021. Until then, manufacturers, importers and retailers have time to implement the new regulations.
